Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA)

Emotional Literacy Support Assistant

We have two members of staff in who are trained ELSA's.  Their role is to support children who may have difficulties in the following areas:

  •    emotional awareness
  •    social skills
  •    friendship skills
  •    self-esteem
  •    anger management.

A class teacher will refer a child who they feel may benefit from some ELSA support.  Support may be given on a 1:1 basis or in a small group.  Clear goals for the child will be set which may be achieved in half a term or may take longer.  A review takes place after six weeks between the ELSA and the teacher.

Sessions, which are about twenty minutes long and are fun and lighthearted.  The activities are very practical and involve lots of games.  Once the goals have been achieved it may be decided to stop the sessions and allow time for the child to consolidate and generalise the skills.
